Life of Bennett Higgins, Moderator of Trinity Congregational UCC

When Faith Walked in the Door

On Thursday, December 16, 2010, the family, members, and friends of Trinity
Congregational Church, United Church of Christ celebrated the life of Bennett
Edward Higgins. I am writing about this event to the Southeast Conference as a
bridge of faith and hope to those persons who never knew him, and to those
persons who knew him, what joy and fond memories we now have.

Bennett Higgins was a faithful member to Trinity, the AL/TN Association,
Southeast Conference, and his community. He served as Moderator of Trinity for
over 30 years. Also, Bennett was an educator for 34 years in the Limestone
County School System; one of the founding members of the Limestone County
Branch of the NAACP; a charter member of the

Alabama Democratic of the Limestone County Branch and was chairman for many
years. Because of his love for country, he joined the United States Army and
served during the Korean Conflict. Finally, but not exhaustively, Bennett applied
passed down entrepreneurial skills from his father and grandfather and became
co-founder and co-owner of Peoples Funeral Home, Inc. in Athens, Alabama.

His devoted wife Shirley Higgins of over 50 years is still a very devoted member of
Trinity and was very active in the conference and association too. However, I will
always remember Bennett Edward Higgins as an inspiration to me. He served on
the AL/TN Church and Ministry Committee when I first met him. Moreover, Bennett
inspired me as pastor of Trinity when his faith walked through the door on many
occasions despite his failing health. He came to praise God from whom all

blessings flow and receive strength to go on despite the vicissitudes of life.
